† IN OUR PRAYERS  The F. Family, at the death of Pat F.; Lyssabelle H., healing from two broken wrists after a fall; Jerry K., suffering from severe burns; Jack H., at St. Luke’s in Carthage; Bonnie L., at Oak Pointe, Carthage; Katherine R., homebound; Stephen Ministry and their care receivers.

† WEDNESDAY CHURCH  In an effort to allow more people to worship in a setting where they feel comfortable, Pastor and the Board of Elders   have decided to hold a service with a higher level of precautions.  This service will be one where all attendees wear masks.  There will be no congregational singing.  It will not be a communion service.  The plan at this time is to offer this service on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month at 11:00 am.  The first opportunity to worship at this service will be August 19.  The service will adopt the readings and message of the previous Sunday.  The service will be held in the sanctuary using the distancing practices that we normally use on Sunday mornings.

† SUNDAY SCHOOL  Plans are in the works for the Fall Sunday school session.  Rally Day will be held on Sunday, August 30, after the service around 10:15 am.  Come and join us as we start a new set of lessons to learn about God’s love for his children!

† DRIVE-UP COMMUNION  In an effort to allow more people to take communion in a setting where they feel comfortable, Pastor and the Board of Elders have decided to offer drive-up communion on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 2:00-3:00 pm.  You do not need to sign up for a time slot as we did on Maundy Thursday.  Similar to Maundy Thursday, however, it will be offered outside under the overhang by the front door.  If you would like communion at a different time, you may call the church office and schedule a time with Pastor.

† THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY  It seems that there is some interest in beginning to meet again for Thursday morning Bible Class.  Starting August 20, we will meet downstairs in the fellowship hall where we normally had been meeting.  We will spread the tables out in an effort to maintain distance and we will wear masks.  Refreshments will not be served.

Church Activities

Good Shepherd Family, The past few months have been a unique experience for everyone. We have all had to figure out how to do things in our life a little differently. Here at church we have had to figure out how to provide for your spiritual needs while also being sensitive to the unique health needs of this pandemic. Many of the steps we have taken have been in response to guidelines given to us by government authorities and by our own church body. As you may know, many of these guidelines have become less restrictive recently as the danger from this pandemic seems to be in decline. All the guidelines I have seen, however, emphasize that the danger of infection still exists and should be considered with great care.

On May 5th, the board of elders met to discuss what the church will do regarding worship in light of the relaxation of restrictions on gathering. The board decided that we would resume holding worship services in our sanctuary in accordance with the guidelines set out by the state of Missouri and the Missouri District of the LCMS. Keeping in the spirit of the new guidelines, we will be taking a measured approach to our return to in-person worship.

Allow me, at this juncture, to offer some pastoral advice. Christians can (and certainly do) disagree about what the best course of action is in this situation. We are not called by God to have the same opinions. We are called by God to love each other. It has been disheartening to see in secular society, people who are quick to observe a person’s opinion or decision and subsequently infer that they are evil. To do this with such little information one must assume the worst about their neighbor’s thoughts, priorities, and intentions. As followers of Christ you are called to assume the best about your neighbor’s thoughts, priorities, and intentions. When someone has made a choice that is different than the choice you have made regarding this pandemic that difference should be met with love and understanding. We are not secular society. We are the church.

That being said, many of you will make different choices regarding attendance of our services in person or online. This is to be expected. We all have different thoughts about what the best course of action is. We have different priorities when it comes to how we order our life. I trust, though, that we all intend to be good Christians. A good Christian may choose to stay home and view the service online (or read the sermon later). Simply because a service is offered does not mean that you need to come. Indeed, given that the pandemic seems to present a higher risk to the older demographic I would not expect to see them here in church as much as individuals with a lower risk. I want you all to feel free to make the decision to come or to stay with confidence.

Before we delve into some of the finer details of how things will go, there are some general things to keep in mind. The idea is to minimize the possible spread of the virus by limiting contact with individuals (or the things they have touched). Droplets (of saliva) can travel about 6ft from one’s mouth hence the 6ft distancing requirement. So, while we are gathering together we ask that you keep 6ft apart as much as possible and limit the amount of things that you touch. Most of what follows will be done to achieve these goals.

It needs to be said that if you are feeling bad, have a temperature or are exhibiting any other symptoms of COVID -19 you should stay at home. We will sanitize/disinfect commonly touched surfaces in the church prior to worship. We have removed the hymnals from the pews and will be using the bulletins only. Dispose of them after the service. We plan to have an usher open the doors for people as they enter the building (or prop the door) to minimize contact with the handles. We will make use of every other pew in order to maintain adequate distancing during worship. Bulletins will be placed in the pews intended to be occupied. Please sit in family groups (usually the people you drove to church with). The offering plates will simply stay by the back doors of the sanctuary and will not be passed. We do plan on offering communion. To echo what I stated above, you do not have to take it if you are uncomfortable. Care will be taken in the distribution of the sacrament, the details of which are more than I will get into here. Further details will be given in person on Sunday.

In order to help us adequately prepare for worship we need to have some idea of how many people will be attending, as there are some restrictions on space. For this reason, we are asking that you call the church and “sign up” (for lack of a better term) before attending. We would like to have a good idea of how many people will be there by Friday at noon. I understand that today is Wednesday which does not leave much time. If you call the church after hours and leave us a message that would suffice. We plan on having to do this in the weeks to come.

At this point we will only be having worship and using the church facilities as little as possible (no bible class, Sunday School, blood pressure checks, nursery use, etc.). We plan to continue in this way until the first week in June when we will meet again to decide further steps. We plan to continue to provide an online recording of the worship service going forward even at the end of this pandemic. Since the service will held on Sunday at 9am we will attempt to present it live on Facebook. Regardless of whether the internet connection holds up we will have a recording to post later. It will, of course, be later in the day though. I hope this letter will be able to address most of the question that you might have about what we plan to do. If there is something that you think needs to be addressed, please let us know.

Easter Service

Good Shepherd friends and family,

I regret to inform you that we will not be meeting at the 66 Drive-In Theatre tomorrow. The weather forecast for Easter Sunday is still a chance of thunderstorms. The forecasts that I have looked at show a large group of thunderstorms moving across Arkansas with our region getting a bit of the top part of the system. If the forecast was sparse rain I may have decided to tough it out but standing outside leading a service in a thunderstorm does not seem like a prudent choice. Furthermore, this would have been the first time we would have held a service there. Getting situated and learning how and where to set up equipment is a significant task in fair weather. If I knew exactly how, where and what I needed to do I might have been more bold. As it is, I do not think that it would be quite worth it to have you all come out to a service that you may not be able to see or potentially even hear.
As planned, I will record the Sunday service tonight and get it up on Facebook by Sunday morning. Perhaps we will have to revisit the 66 Drive-In Theatre option another time. God’s blessings to you all and have a happy Easter.

In Christ,

Pastor Mehl

Holy Week Events

An update for the events of Holy Week

On Thursday we will record the Maundy Thursday service at 9:30am and post it as soon as possible after that.

“Drive-up” communion is scheduled from 1-3 in the afternoon and 6-7:30 in the evening. We are scheduling those in 15min. slots so as to keep the amount of people at church to a minimum. Each time of distribution will involve driving up to the overhang by the front doors of the church (unless we give you other instructions). Pastor will have the elements set up and will follow a short order of service that he will have printed out for himself. We will make a copy available to you in an email if you wish to print off and use your own. If you wish to stand outside your vehicle you may. Once the elements are consecrated you will get them yourself from the table. The service will conclude shortly after that and things will be reset for the next group. This service is designed to allow you to receive the sacrament while maintaining social distancing. It would be counter-productive for individuals to go into the church for anything. In order to keep communion in the 15 min. timeframe we will need to keep things brief. It will feel unusual as none of us have ever done this in this way before. Times are what they are and the sacrament still is what it is, Christ’s body and blood given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Let us focus on and take comfort in what God offers us even if it comes in an unusual way.

The Good Friday Service will be recorded on Thursday and posted on Friday at 11am.

For Easter Sunday we have planned to make use of the 66 Drive-In Theatre’s venue. I have checked with them about meeting in light of the recent Missouri statewide order. I have been assured that we will be fine as long as we are sure to stay in our vehicles for the duration of the service. To that point, none of the facilities at the theater will be open or available. We are scheduled to have the theatre from 1 to 2pm on that Sunday. I understand that there is a group scheduled after us, so we will not be able to go over on time. The 66 Drive-in Theatre is not charging the church for the use of their facilities but they are asking for a free-will donation. There will be a place to put donations on your way out after the service.
All that being said, the forecast at the time of this writing is rain for Sunday. Saturday at noon I will make the call (via our weekly email list and Facebook) about whether or not we will be meeting at the drive-in. If we are not meeting I will record the service on Sunday morning at church and will post it as soon as possible afterword.

I hope that this covers most of the things that will be happening. If there is something that you have questions about do not hesitate to contact the church and ask. Thank you.

In Christ,
Pastor Mehl
