Announcements — September 28, 2014

† IN OUR PRAYERS H. family, at the death of Marie H.;  Mary F., home with her daughter; Kristen D., Todd H. (Pastor’s nephew) and Sandy O., recovering from surgery; Royce A. (Wynette Q.’s father)Paula B.Mary C., and Howard S. undergoing treatment for cancer.

† MARIE HERZOG  Our Lord received unto himself Marie Elizabeth Herzog on Friday, September 19, after a long illness.  She had been living in the St. Louis area close to her family.  Marie had been an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.  A       memorial service will be conducted at 5 pm, Saturday, Sept. 27, at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.  Graveside Services have been planned for 11 am, Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Carthage.

† HOG ROAST OUTREACH EVENT  This evening, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, is our community outreach event and fundraiser.  Come,  have a great meal and enjoy the various musical groups.  We would like to see all of our Good Shepherd folks here tonight at the church to support this wonderful event!

† LWML “WOMEN TO WOMEN” NIGHT  ALL ladies of the   congregation are invited to the annual “Women to Women” night of fellowship on Tuesday, October 7, at 6:00 pm at El Charro in         Carthage.  The theme this year is Restore-Renew-Refurbish.  Ladies are encouraged to bring an item that they have restored, renewed, or refurbished.  RSVP to Mary P. or Judy G.

† PARENTS, GOOD SHEPHERD NEEDS YOUR CHILDREN!  Our Sunday School children have been working on three songs to sing at the GSLC Community Hog Roast this evening from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.    Try and have the kids here by 5:30 pm so they will be ready to go.  We’re excited to hear those wonderful young voices praising God!

GUYS FALL FISHING RETREAT  If you are looking for a fun weekend of camping and fishing, then please join us the weekend of Oct. 24 – 26, for the annual guys fall fishing retreat and campout.  The guys will be going to Dale & LeeAnn B.’ property, which is located just north of Lockwood.  There is a large stocked pond for fishing from the bank.  Men and boys of all ages are welcome — and bring your friends!  Contact Dale with any questions.

† HOBO DINNER  Come join us in celebrating the fall at the annual Hobo Dinner on Sunday, October 19.  The fun begins at 5:30 pm.  Just bring some a’ yer own pre-cooked stew (canned is okay; yer fav’rit homemade recipe is better), or you can bring some cooked vegetables or meat to toss in.  There will be a jack-o-lantern carving contest, so bring along an uncarved pumpkin.  There will also be carnival games and treats for the kids and a prize for the best dressed hobo.  Watch for a sign-up sheet in the narthex.  We will be asking for people to help by bringing desserts, chips, crackers, or dips.  Y’all come now, ya hear!?

† LUTHERAN YOUTH FELLOWSHIP will meet at the church next Sunday evening at 5:00 pm to plan the games for the Hobo    Dinner and then go to a corn maze.

† PORTALS OF PRAYER  The new Portals of Prayer for the fall are on the table by the nursery in the narthex.

† LWML QUARTERLIES  The new Quarterlies are on the table by the nursery in the narthex.  Ladies, remember to pick one up!

† OVER 60 CENTER MEAL DELIVERY  Monday, October 13, through Friday, October 17, is Good Shepherd’s week to deliver meals for the Over-60 Center.  If you can help with this worthwhile project, please contact Betty Ellefsen, 358-6418.

† ASSISTIVE LISTENING  If you are having a hard time hearing the service, assistive listening devices are available from the ushers.  They work like a transistor radio and you can control the volume.

† BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS are available in the nurse’s office   after the service.  You will be given a small form that can be carried in your wallet which will include medical information and a log of your blood pressure readings.

† PRAYER BEARS are in the sanctuary pews and available to be signed out (notebook in narthex by nursery) and given to anyone that needs God’s love, comfort, and peace.

† IT’S COMING!  GSLC is going whole hog!  Next Sunday, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, GSLC will host a community outreach event and fundraiser featuring a hog roast and a showcase of our musical talent.  Join us for some fun, music, and fellowship and support this special event.

† WHOLE HOG NEEDS  Jennifer S. is gathering food items, paper products and monetary donations to complete the BBQ dinner on September 28 for the community outreach project.  Dinner will include: pulled pork sandwiches, chips, beans and a brownie.  A new and improved sign-up sheet is on the round table in the Narthex.  Please stop by and let us know how you might be able to help!  Thank you!

† JR CONFIRMATION instruction started Wednesday, Sept. 10.  The class runs from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.  Luther’s Small Catechism with Explanation and a notebook are provided, but each student needs to bring their own Bible.

† MIDWEEK CLASS are once again being offered along with Jr Confirmation class.  The classes are on Wednesday from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. You can contact Earl Kirn if you would like any information or have  questions.

† THRIVENT CHAPTER MEETING  Our next meeting will be at Faith Lutheran Church, in Carthage, at 6:30 pm, on September 22.  We will finalize plans for a fall social activity and discuss the election of  chapter officers.  We still need members to be officers.   Everyone is    welcome to attend.

† BACK TO TWO SERVICES  Last week we returned to our regular two services.  Worship services are at 8:15 and 10:45 am with Sunday School and Adult Bible Class at 9:30 am.  Holy Communion will be alternated between the two services with Holy Communion in the 8:15 service today.

† SUNDAY SCHOOL RALLY DAY  Thanks to all those who helped make this year’s Sunday School Rally Day a big success!  The children had a wonderful time celebrating the beginning of a new  Sunday School term.

† ADULT BIBLE CLASS  Pastor started a new session last Sunday in Adult Bible Class covering Galatians.

† LUTHERAN YOUTH FELLOWSHIP will meet next Sunday, September 21, at 6:00 pm here at the church for an ice cream “Sunday” movie night.

† LWML MITE BOX  If you are looking for a place to put your spare change, check out the new LWML Mite box, purchased in memory of Lois M., on the round table in the narthex.  The LWML collects this money and uses it to support world-wide mission projects.  It is amazing what these Mites can do.

† LWML QUARTERLIES  The new Quarterlies are on the table by the nursery in the narthex.  Ladies, remember to pick one up!

† LUTHERAN FAMILY AND CHILDREN SERVICES  LFCS is offering a workshop with the purpose of building Missouri’s capacity for future disasters.  If you are interested, you can pick up an informational sheet on the round table in the narthex.

† THRIVENT FINANCIAL BOARD  We are required to hold an    election for our local Thrivent Financial chapter board.  We need 5 officers in order to receive any funding for the local chapter.  We are still in need of 3 officers to have the required 5 for the board.  We have approximately 8 meetings per year and it normally requires only 2-4 hours/month.  The term is for 1 year.  If you would consider  serving, please talk to one of the existing officers or call Daryl Weinkein at 499-3119.  Nominations are need by September 22nd.

† ELDERS’ MEETING  There will be an Elders’ Meeting this Monday at    7:00 pm.

† BACK TO TWO SERVICES  Today we return to our regular two services.  Worship services will be at 8:15 and 10:45 am with Sunday School and Adult  Bible Class at 9:30 am.  Holy Communion will be alternated between the two  services starting with the 10:45 service today.

† LUTHERAN YOUTH FELLOWSHIP will have their regular meeting tonight at 6:00 pm here at the church.

† JR CONFIRMATION instruction will start this Wednesday, September 10, at 6:30 pm.  The class will end at 7:30 pm.  Luther’s Small Catechism with Explanation and a notebook will be provided, but each student will need to bring their own Bible.  A parents’ meeting will be held after each worship service today, to go over the particulars of the class and answer any questions.

† OVER-50 GOOD SHEPHERDS will meet this Thursday evening at 6:00 pm. Come join us for games, food, fellowship and fun.

† TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH AND SCHOOL in Freistatt, MO, will be celebrating their 140th anniversary on September 14.  We are invited to join them for a day full of festivities starting at 8:30 am and going into the afternoon.  The theme for the celebration is “Furthering the Kingdom of Christ”.  For questions, please contact Betty Sawyer at 417-825-5697.
