† IN OUR PRAYERS S. family, at the death of Bud S.; Paula B.,Mary C., and Tim S., undergoing treatment for cancer.

† BUD SALOGA  Maynard (Bud) Arthur Saloga, 81, was received into his Savior’s arms July 3, 2014, while working at his home in Carthage.  He was born Nov. 25, 1932, in Monett, MO, the son of Oscar Saloga and Ceclia “Schad” Saloga.  He was baptized December 18, 1932, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Purdy, MO and on May 4, 1947 would confirm his Christian faith through the Rite of Confirmation at St. John’s.  He graduated from Purdy High School with the class of 1951.  Bud served in the United States Air Force.  Bud was united in marriage to Ruby Ann Lampe on Feb. 17, 1962, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freistatt, MO.  Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Nancy Jane and Katherine Ann.  He worked for Standard Oil both as a station owner in Monett and as a bulk agent from 1964 to 1976.  Bud then owned and operated B & R Rebuilders in Carthage from 1976 until he retired in 2001.  Bud was a charter and active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he regularly worshipped and participated in congregational activities.  Services were held on Monday, July 7, at 2:00 pm here at the church.  Burial was in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or Good Shepherd Lutheran Cemetery Fund in care of Ulmer Funeral Home. 

† GERMANY PRESENTATION  Today during Bible Class, Pastor will give a presentation on the trip to Germany.  There will be a potluck meal following the presentation.  Fried chicken and drinks will be provided.  Come and enjoy hearing not only about this wonderful experience, but also learn some things about the life of Martin Luther.

† LUTHERAN YOUTH FELLOWSHIP (LYF) will have a meeting at the church this evening at 6:00 pm.

† ELDERS’ MEETING this Monday evening at 7:00 pm.

† THE VBS KICK-OFF is today at the Carthage Municipal Park.There is a slight change in time.  Because of the heat, Kiddie Land will not open until 5:00 pm.   So come out at 4:30 for the cook-out.  Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided.  Those attending are asked to bring a dish to share.  The festivities will conclude with swimming at the Carthage Municipal Pool from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.  Join us for some summer fun & fellowship!

† VBS SIGN-UP  This year’s VBS will be held Sunday, July 27 – Thursday, July 31, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a light meal provided at 5:30 pm.  Registration forms are on the round table.  If your child plans to attend, please fill one out and place it in the basket provided.

† VBS WORK DAY  There will be a work day this Saturday, July 19, starting  at 9:00 am for anyone who wants to come and help make decorations and props to make this year’s VBS really come to life.

† IT’S COMING!  GSLC is going whole hog!  This fall, at a date yet to be announced, GSLC will host a community outreach event featuring a hog roast and a showcase of our musical talent.  To express your interest, talk with Rob Sager or Earl Kirn.

† LUTHERAN NIGHT  Friday, August 1, is the date for this year’s Lutheran Night with the Springfield Baseball Cardinals.  Game time is 7:10 pm.  Tickets will be $7.00 each with $1.00 going to the Lutheran Children & Family Services.  There is a sign-up sheet on the round table in the narthex and Jim Garoutte will be collecting the money.

THRIVENT WORKSHOP  Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will be the   location for a Thrivent Workshop dealing with long-term care on Wed., July 23,    at 6:00 pm.  Dinner will be served and it is free to attend.  The workshop will be hosted by Thomas Mehl, Financial Consultant and presented by John Estes,     Managing Partner.  Please join them to learn how to make long-term care part of your overall financial strategy and give your family the opportunity to care about you instead of for you.  Space is limited, so please RSVP by Monday, July 21, to

Announcements — July 6, 2014

† IN OUR PRAYERS E. family, at the death of Fern H.; S. family, at the death of Bud S.; Howard S., Ruth B.,recovering at home; Paula B.,Mary C., and Tim S., undergoing treatment for cancer.

† FERN H.  Fern Christene H., 95, passed away July 1, 2014, at Webb City Health and Rehab. Fern was born September 24, 1918, in Carthage, MO, the daughter of Homer Guy Harris and Susan Fern Holderman Harris.  She married Karl Eugene H. on October 31, 1937.  Fern is survived by two daughters, Judy Kay S. and husband Charles, and Gloria Jean E. and husband Vernon (Sonny); four grandchildren, Guy S. of Dallas, Heather Elder R. and husband Pete of Carthage, Greg S. and wife Laura of Branson, and Peter E. and wife Taryn of Carthage; eight great-grandchildren, Kimberly S., Austin R., Caleb E., Dustin S., Tanner R., Jayden E., Jensyn E., and Jaxon E.; two great-great-grandchildren, Johnathan P. (E.), and Maycy S.  One great-grandchild, Marissa R., preceded her in death.  Fern was involved with her church most of her adult life.  She was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Carthage.  She was also active in Extension Club.  Services were held Thursday, July 3, at 2:00 p.m. here at the church. Interment followed in Curtis Cemetery in Carthage, MO.

† BUD S. passed away on Thursday, July 3.  The plans for the   funeral  services will be announced.  Our prayers go out to his family at this time of loss.

† GERMANY PRESENTATION On July 13, during Bible Class time,  Pastor Schnackenberg will give a presentation on the trip to Germany.      Because it is likely that this will last a little longer than the normal Bible class hour and it will be getting over around lunch time, it has been decided that a potluck meal is in order.  Please bring a dish to share and we will enjoy a light meal afterward.  Drinks will be provided.  Come and enjoy hearing not only about this wonderful experience, but also learn some things about the life of Martin Luther.

† BLACK EYES  Pastor Schnackenberg had minor surgery on his eyelids last week to improve his vision.  The surgery went great but it did result in some swelling and bruising around his eyes.

† FLOWER CHART  There are several empty dates coming up on the calendar for the next few months.  If you would like to place flowers at the altar for a special occasion or in memory of someone, please sign the flower chart hanging on the wall by the water fountain, outside the church office.

† LUTHERAN YOUTH FELLOWSHIP (LYF) will have a meeting at the church this evening at 6:00 pm.

† GEARING UP FOR VBS  This year’s Vacation Bible School, Weird Animals, will run from July 27-31.  Christian Education would like to get shirts for all the children attending and all the adults volunteering this year.  There is an order form on the round table in the narthex where you can designate your size if you plan on attending.  VBS registration forms are also on the round table.  If your child plans to attend, please fill one out and place it in the basket provided.

† VBS FOOD DONATIONS  If you would like to donate food supplies for this year’s VBS dinners, there is a sign-up sheet on the round table.  There is a container for the supplies under the coat rack in the narthex.

† SUNDAY SCHOOL PRESENTATION  Today during the service, the Sunday School children will be providing a short patriotic presentation in honor of the Fourth of July.  Thank you Sunday School children and teachers!

† LYF MO DISTRICT GATHERING  A group of our youth left for the     District Youth Gathering in Springfield, MO, on Friday, June 27.  They will be    returning this afternoon.

† MEAL DELIVERY  A special thank you to all those who helped deliver meals this week.  What a great way to help members of our community!

† LUTHERAN YOUTH FELLOWSHIP  The LYF will be meeting at the church tonight at 6:00.

† CHRISTIAN EDUCATION MEETING  There will be a Christian Education meeting today after the Sunday School hour.  We will meet in the fellowship hall and a light lunch will be provided.  Anyone interested in Christian Education is welcome to attend.
